Mandatory Commercial Recycling

Effective July 1, 2012, California State law AB 341 requires commercial enterprises which generate four cubic yards or more of solid waste weekly to participate in recycling programs. This requirement also includes multi-family housing complexes of five units or more, regardless of the amount of solid waste generated each week. In 2019, the City of Jurupa Valley passed Ordinance No. 2019-22, which codified these State requirements into the City’s municipal code.

What Can be Recycled?

  • Aerosol cans (completely empty)
  • Aluminum cans
  • Cardboard
  • Cartons
  • Cereal boxes (no wax paper lining)
  • Coupons
  • Envelopes
  • Glass bottles & jars
  • Magazines/catalogs
  • Newspaper
  • Paper
  • Plastic containers
  • Plastic milk jugs
  • Tin cans
  • Wrapping paper

Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling

Effective January 1, 2019, any commercial entity that generates two or more cubic yards of solid waste per week must arrange for organics recycling. Local businesses that meet the two or more cubic yard threshold are required to arrange for organics recycling services per Ordinance No. 2019-22. Organics recycling (also commonly referred to as "food waste" recycling) reduces the amount of material going into landfills. This helps the State’s efforts to reduce landfill traffic and achieve diversion goals.

Acceptable items for food waste recycling:

  • Bones
  • Breads
  • Grains
  • Coffee grounds
  • Cooked meats and poultry
  • Cooked seafood
  • Dairy products
